PROJECT TYPE: Secondary
DURATION :3 months
In spite of the possible estimation of the average depletion life of an activated carbon filter from the adsorption isotherms, the degree of depletion of these activated carbons is unknown in the operation of the DWTPs. Their characterization is carried out in specialized laboratories equipped with specific equipment and standardized testing procedures, with the consequent cost and delay in obtaining results. A possible estimation of the degree of exhaustion of activated carbon could be the determination of the total organic carbon at the inlet and outlet of the activated carbon. However, due to possible phenomena such as desorption processes or detachment of biofilms, as well as the nature of the influent organic matter, this method may not be adequate. For this reason, this project proposes the realization of a technological monitoring of possible rapid tests for the evaluation of the degree of exhaustion of an activated carbon.
The CARBOKIT II project is the second part of a general CARBOKIT project, where the methods selected after the technological watch on activated carbon characterization methods carried out during the CARBOKIT I project will be carried out at CATABB and Gaiker’s facilities.
The objectives of the project will be the following:
- Following the analysis of the state of the art carried out in the first part, the methods considered most viable will be put into practice.
- Economic analysis of all methods reviewed for justification of the final proposal.
- Proposal of a method based on experimentation and external consultation.
