Water Supply magazine has published in January (Vol 24 No 1) the study carried out by CATABB on adsorption and desorption phenomena in activated carbon filters. Water Supply is a scientific publication of the IWA (International Water Association).
Trihalomethanes (THMs) are harmful disinfection by-products generated during the water purification process by the reaction of organic matter with chlorine. THMs can be removed by granular activated carbon (GAC) and their adsorption processes have been studied. However, there are few studies on their desorption from GAC and no data on their full-scale desorption are available. This paper presents the results obtained in monitoring the adsorption and desorption processes of THMs in a full-scale plant considering different treatment configurations and different types of GACs, as well as various types of influent waters.
